Relentless Repression: Over 400 Falun Gong Practitioners Sentenced in China in 2024
An investigation reveals the ongoing persecution of the spiritual movement as it marks a somber anniversary.
As the world watches and joins global demonstrations commemorating 25 years of Falun Gong persecution, a Chinese spiritual sect that remains the target of relentless repression, the situation in China remains dire and alarming. Recent reports paint a picture of violence and injustice that shows no signs of abating.
According to data collected by Falun Gong itself, considered credible by investigative sources like "Bitter Winter" and corroborated by numerous cases reported in local media, the first half of 2024 saw at least 447 practitioners sentenced by Chinese courts. This number represents only the tip of the iceberg of a repression that spans the entire country.
The sentences are distributed across twenty-seven different provinces and regions, with some areas standing out for the severity of the punishments. Among these, Shandong Province leads with 78 sentences, followed by Liaoning with 65, and the city of Jilin with 50. Other provinces like Heilongjiang, Hubei, and Hebei show equally concerning figures, revealing a crackdown that spares no part of the country.
The profile of the victims of this persecution is equally shocking. Of these, 62 practitioners were over 60 years old, with some reaching as old as 94. Despite their advanced age, which in many cases should elicit a minimum of compassion and respect, these elderly individuals were nonetheless sentenced, with more than half receiving prison terms exceeding three years.
Some practitioners received particularly harsh sentences: Jiao Chuanfu, from Jilin Province, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Hu Fengjun, a woman from Liaoning Province, received an 11-year sentence. These punishments were compounded by hefty fines, with 87 practitioners fined more than 10,000 yuan, and some fines reaching as high as 50,000 yuan—sums that represent yet another tool of oppression.
The toll of this cruel persecution is further exacerbated by the news of 84 deaths among practitioners between January and May 2024. These deaths, though occurring months or even years earlier, were only recently documented, bringing to light a hidden and tragic reality that continues to evade international scrutiny.
As the Falun Gong movement strives to expose these atrocities, the international community largely remains a passive observer, seemingly powerless in the face of a regime that continues to act with impunity. The pressing question is: how much longer can the world ignore such brutality?
To fully grasp the scope of this repression, it is recommended to watch the documentary film The Impact. This film provides an in-depth view of these events, offering a comprehensive and detailed picture of the situation.
