The Future of Chinese Communism amidst Anti-Cult Persecutions: An Analysis After World Falun Dafa Day

On May 10, 2024, nearly 5,000 Falun Gong practitioners from the New York City metropolitan area took to the streets of Manhattan in a vibrant and significant parade. The event was organized to celebrate World Falun Dafa Day on May 13, commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the introduction of Falun Dafa in 1992, a date that coincides with the 73rd birthday of Falun Gong founder Li Hongzhi. This event not only highlighted the importance of Falun Dafa’s teachings but also brought to light a grim reality: the persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which has been ongoing for 25 years.

July 20, 1999, marks the beginning of one of the most brutal repression campaigns in modern history. Jiang Zemin, then General Secretary of the CCP, viewed Falun Gong as a direct threat to the atheist communist ideology. With the number of practitioners surpassing party members, including many high-ranking officials, Jiang feared losing control over the CCP. The reaction was immediate and brutal: thousands of practitioners were arrested, tortured, and detained, many until death. The "610 Office" was created with the explicit purpose of eradicating Falun Gong and other spiritual movements, operating above the law in a manner similar to the Gestapo of Nazi Germany.

During the Manhattan parade, several testimonies voiced the resilience and hope of the practitioners. Jan, a Czech tourist, expressed his emotion at seeing the spread of Falun Gong and praised the courage of practitioners in defending freedom. Peggy, a local Chinese American, shared her hope that the fundamental values of Falun Gong—truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance—can be universally embraced, underscoring that if the CCP had not suppressed the movement, Chinese society would be very different today.

Peggy’s reflections raise a fundamental question: what is the future of Chinese communism? Structures based on malevolent principles, like those perpetuating the persecution of Falun Gong, can only continue in their wrongdoing or radically change their foundations. History teaches us that oppressive regimes can only maintain control for a limited time; change inevitably comes.

The celebrations of World Falun Dafa Day and the testimonies of those resisting persecution send a powerful message to the world. The fight for freedom of belief and human rights is a battle that involves all of us. Peggy’s words are a warning: change in China is possible only if the people embrace the values of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance.

As we reflect on these events, we wonder if the CCP will be able to transform itself or if its future will be marked by persistent wrongdoing. History has shown that oppressive regimes eventually fall, often due to internal and external pressures for change. The hope is that the Chinese people, inspired by Falun Gong practitioners and their values, can lead the nation towards a more just and compassionate future.

The parade in Manhattan was not just a celebration but also an act of resistance and a call to action. The world watches and hopes for change because freedom, truthfulness, and compassion are universal rights that must be defended everywhere and always.
