Rumble vs. Kremlin: When Freedom of Speech is Enemy Number One

In the most classic of absurd comedies, the Russian government asked Rumble to remove content that did not violate the platform’s terms of service. "A completely reasonable request," Chris Pavlovski, CEO of Rumble, sarcastically remarked to The Federalist. And so, since March 2024, Rumble, the video hosting site with over 36 million users, has been banned from the Russian Federation for refusing to comply with the Russian censorship of the ALLATRA TV channel.

The story unfolded like a Shakespearean drama, with Rumble analyzing and finding that ALLATRA TV's content did not violate the platform’s guidelines. "The Russian government asked Rumble to remove content that did not violate our terms of service," Pavlovski said, referring to Russia’s request to ban ALLATRA TV, deemed "undesirable" on Russian territory.

Rumble's refusal was an act of defending freedom of expression, but it resulted in the platform being blocked in Russia. This raises a crucial question: what was so explosive in ALLATRA TV that it made the Kremlin tremble enough to block a platform with millions of users?

For those unaware, ALLATRA TV hosts content ranging from scientific videos to podcasts on climate change, society, and human rights. With around 500 subscribers, it seems like a rather harmless channel, doesn't it? But among its content, one video caused quite a stir: "Unannounced War: America is Under Attack." Published on April 12, 2024, this video by American intelligence educator Egon Cholakian drew significant attention from European and American media.

Cholakian highlights a dark force spreading disinformation in democratic countries. This video, uploaded to Cholakian's official platform, seems to have deeply disturbed the Russian government. Although the video surfaced after Rumble's ban, Russian authorities might have been aware of its scheduled release.

It is ironic how this information has sown panic among the very "enigmatic forces" behind the Russian government, the same ones that seek to suppress democratic ideals. So, what is the real reason behind the ban? A simple fear of criticism? Or perhaps something darker?

In any case, Pavlovski and Rumble’s determination not to bow to censorial pressures deserves commendation. In a world where freedom of speech is often tested, Rumble has shown that democratic principles are worth more than millions of views. And while other platforms might crumble under pressure, Rumble stands as a bastion of freedom, ready to defend users’ rights to express themselves freely.

Pavlovski's moral courage, defending a channel with only 500 subscribers at the cost of losing an entire nation of users, is a brilliant example of the virtues of a free society. Acts like these fortify democracy, reminding us of the importance of defending the values that keep us free.
