CAN: Anti-Cult, Deprogramming, and Criminality

American Anti-Cultism and Deprogramming

In the heart of an America obsessed with religious sects, a controversial movement known as the Anti-Cult Movement (ACM) developed, embracing questionable and often illegal methods in an attempt to "save" individuals from their religious choices. Based on pseudoscientific theories of brainwashing, this movement supported a criminal but profitable industry: deprogramming.

Deprogramming, a brutal and coercive practice, became synonymous with kidnappings, involuntary detentions, and psychological and physical abuse. Despite the apparent veneer of professionalism, anti-cult organizations such as the Cult Awareness Network (CAN) and the American Family Foundation (AFF) played key roles in promoting this practice. They presented deprogramming as a necessity to free individuals from the mind control of so-called "destructive cults." However, behind this facade lay a dark reality of violence and human rights violations.

Ted Patrick, often considered the pioneer of deprogramming, perfectly embodied the paradox of a movement claiming to protect people while using methods as coercive as those it denounced. Patrick, without any academic training in behavioral sciences, gained notoriety for his brutal methods and numerous criminal convictions related to kidnappings during deprogrammings.

Deprogramming Cases

A series of deprogramming cases illustrates the violent and often illegal nature of this practice. Despite their notoriety, these cases highlight the terrible experiences of the victims, many of whom were forced to renounce their religious beliefs under threat and coercion.

1. **JB**: Raised as a Roman Catholic, JB converted to Protestantism, angering his parents. After unsuccessful attempts to change his mind, they subjected him to violent deprogramming. He was kidnapped and physically assaulted by deprogrammers trying to force him back to the Catholic faith. Despite the pressure, JB resisted and reported the abusive tactics used against him.

2. **SR**: In the 1980s, a young woman named SR was kidnapped and raped by her deprogrammers, hired by her parents who feared she had been influenced to become a lesbian. SR's case is emblematic of the brutality and total disregard for human rights that characterized many deprogrammings.

3. **KL**: In 1990, KL, a successful businesswoman, was kidnapped at the Seattle airport and detained for eight days in inhumane conditions. Her kidnappers, concerned about her affiliation with the Rama Seminars, tried to "free" her from her beliefs. After being constantly monitored and abused, KL managed to report the incident to the authorities.

4. **LCM**: LCM, a member of the Church Universal and Triumphant, was kidnapped and brutally detained by deprogrammers. Her case, which also involved her children, led to a lengthy legal battle that ultimately saw the kidnappers plead guilty to second-degree kidnapping.

5. **El.M.**: In 1990, El.M., an Amish woman, was kidnapped along with her daughter by deprogrammers hired by her husband. Despite El.M.'s escape and subsequent report, the kidnappers were never prosecuted, reflecting the legal and social complexities of the involved communities.

The Anti-Cult Movement Today

Despite CAN's bankruptcy in 1996, the legacy of the anti-cult movement and its coercive practices persists. Deprogrammers have adopted new terms such as "interventionists" and "exit counselors" to distance themselves from their negative reputation, but abusive practices continue under these new names. The normalization of hate language and coercive tactics highlights a disturbing parallel with other hate movements attempting to integrate into the cultural and political mainstream of the United States.

The fight against destructive cults has revealed a dark side of American moralism, where the end justifies the means and individual rights can be trampled in the name of presumed salvation. It is essential to recognize and denounce these abuses to ensure that the protection of human rights remains at the heart of any initiative against cults and to prevent history from repeating itself with new names and faces.
